đŻđťđ¸ IDGAF đđťđđżđżđ¸đŠđ˘đ¸ Ë . Ýđđ. Ýâ

since everyone loves a method and a challenge i thought iâd take a crack at it! warning: this is unserious but also serious, just like me. tough love incoming!

FREE YOURSELF TODAY! STOP GIVING A FUCK! đŁď¸ i am yelling that as loud as possible from my soapbox with a megaphone. pls imagine it.
LET'S CUT TO THE CHASE: rely on yourself and say idgaf to anything else. a circumstance pops up? idgaf. a doubt crosses your mind? idgaf. your mom laughs at your dreams? idgaf. your favorite blogger says something that makes you worry? idgaf. your sp blocks you? idgaf. you have a dream and you fail in it? idgaf. you wake up in your cr? idgaf. you feel ugly as fuck while manifesting your desired appearance? idgaf. you have two cents in your bank account? idgaf. your head hurts from a migraine? idgaf. a tarot reading says you're going to die in two days? i REALLY dgaf.
IF SOMETHING CONTRADICTS WHAT YOU SAY YOU HAVE â> DON'T GIVE A FUCK! shrug your shoulders and keep it pushing, don't spiral and don't spend eons on it. it's possible, just do it (okay nike!).
TRUE LIBERATION IS NOT GIVING A FUCK. if you don't care about anything except what you say, then nothing can contain you. that is true freedom. free yourself from the mindset of caring about the things that seemingly contradict what you are manifesting. the physical world and everything in it is malleable by you and only you. change it now. release the shame, worry, doubt, and judgement! it's all on you baby. don't let that scare you, let it liberate you.
YOU ARE THE OPERANT POWERâno one on, above, or below this earth can tell you what you can or cannot have. that responsibility falls solely on youânot on your thoughts, dreams, circumstances, angel numbers, favorite bloggers, sp(s), parents, friends, methods (ironic i know), doubts, fears, old beliefs, tarot, astrology ... you get the idea.
WHAT'S THE CHALLENGE? for a month (but saffron- aht aht!! yes a monthâthis is a lifestyle not a game lock in), stop giving a fuck! pretty simple. your new default answer is: idgaf it's mine. literally say that if you want. let it be your favorite affirmation. giggle every time you say it (tehehe idgaf!). let it inspire you! go crazy! there's so many ways to say idgafâyou can say it happily or angrily, be polite with it or mean! it's time to be unserious because life is never that serious. find joy, find the whimsy. stop caring about what everyone and their god damn mothers think and think for yourself. that's all that matters. it's about what you decide in this present moment. you have it, you really do.
DON'T FORCE, JUST BE. the physical realm and everything in it will catch up, let it. nothing can defy your orders, that's law. everything comes from you, that's law. the world is working for you, that's law. anything is possible, that's law. all it takes is a simple change in what you believe, that's law. it's easy as fuck if you want it to be, that's law.
SO NOW WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO? are you going to give your power to things that don't have power? (no.) are you going to stand on business and not give a fuck? (yes.) are you going to get what you want? (yes.) are you going to send me a success story hehe? (you better...)
SAY IDGAF TO EVERYTHING TODAY, TOMORROW, AND FOREVER!!!!!!!!
BTW, i am saying all of this out of love because i really really love y'all like a lot. this community has some creative and talented individuals in it and i appreciate you guys sm! at the time of posting this i have over 100 followers and i hate making posts like that so i'm sneaking my thank you in here, mwah ilysm! đ¤

As a Christian blogger, and Christian overall, I find it hard to post on my Instagram or TikTok platforms. Not because Iâm embarrassed to share the gospel or talk about it; itâs because doing it online feels performative. Of all the Christian tiktokers and influencers I follow / followed: their videos are always short and provocative. While I do find it great theyâre sharing their faith and creating many posts to spread Godâs gospel, I feel sometimes itâs not⌠purposeful towards the spiritual conditions of Christianity. Itâs monetized and easily summarized. Thereâs either very little depth into the scripture and what it examples from following Christ. While not all of us have the same purposes as other parts of the body of Christ, we still have a purpose to fulfill as our specific body - whatever may it be, higher or lower. We canât all be leaders and prophets and teachers and apostles online, and thatâs where I worry we blur the lines between the Holy Spiritâs voice, and our voice. We preach and then act like weâre an Apostle, we read a verse out loud and then act like weâre a Priest, we pray for someone and then act like weâre a Prophet. We do all these things to encourage people to come to Christ: make videos, create content, make memes, do cool edits of Jesus and the Chosen and Bible verses⌠all the meanwhile weâre losing ourselves to the idols of popularity, monetization, false teachings, and religiousness. We become so absorbed in performing the Word of Christ online, we forget to act on the Word of Christ in the real world. Social media connects us to thousands upon billions of people, but we can still reach a disconnection if we arenât looking at our Bibles first and following God, and not following which section in the Bible we can make a video about thatâll get the highest amount of attention. Sharing the Gospel for demand, and not Christly desire.
-> Matthew 5:17 ; 5:19-20, âGods Law is more real and lasting than the stars in the sky, and the ground at your feet. Long after the stars burn out and the earth wears out, Godâs law will be alive!⌠Trivialize the smallest item in Godâs law and you will have only trivialized yourself. But whoever takes it seriously, shows the way for others, and you will find honor in the kingdom.â
Iâm not saying donât preach the gospel online, or make videos to Glorify Jesus, or creative edits. What Iâm warning against is Glorifying the Lord we have in our heads that we represent on the online world. Christianity isnât always heartache and spiritual warfare; but if we highlight only the moments of positivity after those challenges, and post it online comedically and aesthetically, it will cause others mistake those as methods to resolve spiritual deficits, spiritual warfare, and the lack of intimacy they have with the Holy Spirit. Most of the videos by on-face creators, either have a short Bible verse targeting a very specific struggle; or preach a video to stop scrolling, with a few minutes of your time, to share a message completely devoid of the scriptures insight. Again, Iâm not shaming or condemning creators methods of sharing the Gospel, I only want to warn against what Iâve been shown by the Holy Spirit.
We cannot copy and paste scriptures with a video we hope will reach the masses and âspeak to them.â The problem is that the scripture is urged to be read and heard, and not declared and prayed about with God. We arenât encouraging people to look into the scripture, what the scripture indicates in how you relate it to your spiritual vulnerability, and then taking yourself vulnerably and humbly before God and declaring before Him that you need His guidance and help - with that scripture. Weâre teaching self-sufficiency by Scripture, and not God-based suffiency with Scripture. Itâs easier to just preach scriptures AT people, and give them a comforting clip, rather than teach them to rely on God, as the scripture mentions thousands of times - cross referenced front to back - to use the scripture to declare yourself before the Lord and His Kingdom, against the kingdom of Babylon, the kingdom of Darkness. Itâs not enough to read a verse to people on a screen, you need to fulfill your purpose of sharing the Gospel, in the only way you can, through the Son of God. Whom declared Godâs word against the devil and said to rely on the Father.
-> Matthew 4:4, "Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.â
-> Philippians 4:13 âI can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.â
-> John 14:1-3 âBelieve [confidently] in God and trust in Him, [have faith, hold on to it, rely on it, keep going and] believe also in Me.â
-> Psalm 121:1-8 âI will lift up my eyes to the hillsâFrom whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earthâŚâ
You can be a mouthpiece for God, but you need to know how to do it according to the Holy Spirit, and if you donât encourage this in yourself, you arenât going to be able to do it online and in real life. You will then be falsely teaching. You can bring thousands of new believers to the Gates of the Kingdom through your platform, but if you donât share the application of the technologies the scripture works through in praying, and fasting, and the tongue of the Holy Spirit (the Word), you will deny them from the knowing Jesus.
-> Matthew 7:21, âNot everyone who says to me, âLord, Lord,â will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.â
In conclusion. I donât like making videos on Instagram or TikTok about Christ, as it feels performative and short-sighted. Iâm not saying all creators give me the spiritual impression I spoke about, and Iâm not saying donât go about and share the Gospel online, as creatively as you can: Iâm only speaking about the warning signs Iâve experienced and only to speaking about certain ways the Christian online community can become disillusioned between Glorying the loving Christ, and Glorying themselves for loving Christ. Amen.

I donât want to Start Discourseâ˘ď¸ but I just want to advocate for my support of writing/reading dark themes in fiction
Was confronted with a DNI for people who enjoy âdark contentâ. I didnât interact with the blog out of respect for the bloggerâs wishes, but it was a shame considering that I thought Iâd otherwise enjoy the blogâs content and also had no intention of bringing up such content unwarranted.
Also, âdark contentâ is exceedingly vague. I think thatâs what bothered me the most about it. If youâre going to be unnecessarily restrictive with the unrelated reading/writing habits of your followers, at least be specific about it.
Iâm tired of all the Moral Policing and whatnot going on in fandom spaces these days. Iâll die a thousand deaths on the hill that everyone should be allowed to read and write whatever they like. Nothing that happens to fictional characters holds any weight on the reader or writerâs real-world morality. Yâall are contributing to the same shit that gets books banned.
Anyway, I digress. Let it be known that enjoyers of any and all âdark contentâ are more than welcome here. In fact, I encourage it! Read things that disturb and upset and challenge you. I discovered one of my favorite books that way. Seeking our catharsis through exploring darker themes through the safe lens of fiction is perfectly healthy, and itâs also just downright fun.
#I need to go to sleep but this needed to be said#it didnât really but I felt like causing problems anyway#this is your sign to read some fucked up shit today#better yet write some fucked up shit! enjoy your dead doves my friends#Mer talks too much

Alya challenges Aurore to go on this web show Blog-Off where. All the best bloggers judges which blog is best tears Alyas to pieces tell Alya off 4 her Lila worship her toxic bad friend pushy attitude that includes her own bf ex bestie and half her class (Nath Alix Julkea Sabrina Chloe) Aurore wins Lila exposed Alya defeated and devastated
Alya was feeling pretty confident about today. She was sure that she would win the contest today. Recently, she had been watching as Auroreâs blog grew in popularity and had even started to surpass Alyaâs blog in viewership. It infuriated Alya and she was stewing in jealousy for weeks, wanting to do something to make Auroreâs blog less popular. She never even posted about Ladybug herself, she only talked about the akuma attacks themselves. Auroreâs blog was so boring, so Alya couldnât understand how she had more readers than Alyaâs exciting blog. But Alya was going to do something about it.
-----------------
Alya had heard about an amazing new show where amateur bloggers could face off and have both of their blogs judged by professional journalists and bloggers to determine which of the two blogs is better. Alya was sure this would get her readers to come back. Not only would her blog be on national TV which is a great way to get her blogâs name out there, but it would also show the world that her blog is better than Auroreâs and she would get Auroreâs readers. Alya applied for the show and listed Auroreâs blog as the one she wanted to challenge. The TV network that ran the show was very interested since both blogs were about Parisâ heroes and the akumas, which would surely draw in viewers for that episode. They sent Alya an email inviting her to the show, if Aurore agreed. Â
------------------
Alya went to school the next day with a fire in her eyes. She walked right up to Aurore and challenged her to the show. Aurore rolled her eyes, but agreed to the show. She knew how this would end, since Alya never fact checked anything and her blog was just full of lies. But Aurore knew this could be a good way to gain more readers and make connections with professional bloggers. Alya told the TV network that Aurore had agreed and it was decided that the episode would air live next Saturday. Mrs. Bustierâs class was excited and all agreed to meet at Ninoâs house to watch the show, since they werenât allowed to go to the studio with Alya. Marinette and her friends would also be watching from Marinetteâs house to support Aurore. Soon, all anyone at the school could talk about was the show on Saturday.
----------------------
Alya stood in shock on the TV stage, and couldnât believe what she was hearing. First the blogger panel had praised Auroreâs boring blog. They said that is was well organized, well researched, and her writing was excellent. âThis is a very informative blog, and I love the interactive map of akuma battle locations. Very interesting.â Then the bloggers on the show turned to Alyaâs blog and began tearing her blog apart. âWhat is this garbage? All of these stories are obviously false. And there are no sources listed anywhere on here for your most recent stories about this Lila Rossi! This blog doesnât even meet the basic requirements of journalism. This is shameful work Mrs. Cesaire!â Alya stuttered, trying to defend her blog. âW-what do you mean? I do have my sources listed. I got my information straight from the primary source, from Lila herself!â One of the other judges just scoffed. âPlease. Putting aside the fact that a good blogger has multiple sources for each piece to corroborate the story, this girlâs stories are obvious fabrications. For example, her story about saving Jagged Stoneâs cat. It is a well known fact that Jagged Stoneâs only pet is a crocodile named Fang. And even if he did have a cat, how would that cat have ended up on an airport tarmac? And even more importantly, what self respecting airport would let their security be so weak that a teen girl was able to slip through and chase said cat. And being that close to a plane with no hearing protection wouldnât just give a person tinnitus, it would make them deaf. And that is only one of the idiotic stories on this blog.â
---------------------
This continued for several minutes, the bloggers tearing into Alya about her poor journalism skills and all Alya could do is stand in stunned silence. She had never realized how silly Lilaâs stories were until it was pointed out to her, but now it was all Alya could think about. How could she have been so blind that she didnât notice Lila lied to her? When the judges were done speaking to Alya, they didnât even have to deliberate. They immediately declared Aurore the winner, naming her the superior blog. Everyone filtered off the stage, Alya still feeling numb to it all. She at least had the sense to congratulate and apologize to Aurore. Alya was completely devastated as she realized her blog, her pride and joy, was ruined. Sure she could fix the immediate problem. She could take down the stories Lila told her and post an apology, but in the long run she knew her blogâs reputation was ruined and there would be no recovery. It had just been torn apart on live TV, no one would ever read her blog again.
------------------------
After everything had happened, Lila left the school, going back to Italy hoping to find a new class of suckers to trick and no one in Paris heard from her again. She didnât want to leave, but she had just been exposed as a liar on national TV. The class had all gathered to watch the show too, and were furious when they realized that the judge was right and that Lila had been lying. She had raced from Ninoâs house and convinced her mother that she was to frightened of the akumas to stay in Paris anymore. Her mother believed the fake breakdown and immediately sent her back to Italy, never learning about the trouble her daughter caused in Paris.Â
---------------------
Alya did take down the stories on her blog and post an apology, but the damage had been done. Some loyal readers stayed around, but Alya lost a lot of readers after the show and her blog wasnât nearly as popular anymore. Alya decided that instead of chasing viewers, which is what got her in this mess in the first place, she was going to focus on her journalism and try to improve. She made amends with Aurore and Marinette for everything that she did because of Lila, and was even helping Aurore with her blog from time to time. And Aurore was helping Alya with her fact checking. While Alya was sad about what happened, she was glad it happened. It taught her several important lessons about being a reporter and helped to improve her journalism. The lesson itself may have hurt and been embarrassing, but Alya needed it and wouldnât change anything about what happened.

The Structure of Story is now available! Check it out on Amazon, via the link in our bio, or at https://kiingo.co/book

.
.
Performance coach Tony Robbins says that the quality of our lives depends on the state we live in every moment of every day. That state, whether weâre happy, sad, frustrated or excited, depends on three things:
⢠Our physiology â the way we move our bodies, the way we breathe and what we do with our face.
⢠Our language â the words we use, whether spoken out loud or inside our own head, to describe our experiences.
⢠What we focus on â the things we see versus the things we block out or fail to notice.
Today, I want to zone in on that final piece, because what we focus on is key, and it will in turn affect the way you move your body and hold yourself, and the language you use. I see this play out so much around me in general, and in the writing community in particular.
At any given time, the things we focus on determine how we feel and what we make of a situation. And what we focus on, in turn, is governed by the questions we ask ourselves every moment of every day.
Take your writing journey for instance:
If someone leaves you a negative review, do you ask yourself whether this means youâre a failure and your work is a failure? Do you ask yourself how dare that person belittle your work with a bad review? Or do you ask yourself what you can learn from this? Could you ask yourself how good it is that this person was honest in their feedback, so that readers with similar tastes wonât buy your bookâand therefore not spend money on a read they might otherwise dislike and rate negatively too?
See how different questions would illicit different points of focus, and therefore different states? Some are more conducive to a positive mindset, whilst others tend to nurture frustration.
âWhyâ Questions: The Endless Loop.
And so it goes that by asking lousy questions, we get lousy answers. Because our brain has this tendency of taking any request we give it and processing it, regardless of whether or not itâs good for us. Itâll scour through the recesses of our mind and go on and on until it finds an answer.
âWhyâ questions are the worst, because thereâs often no clear answer, or more than one possible answer to them, and it sends our mind on a chase to find as many possible reasons, processing like a headless chicken, often going around in circles, leaving us ruminating.
Take our example again: What if you asked yourself âwhy is this person leaving me a bad review?â
Now unleash your brain on that one, and let it roll with itâyou may get:
⢠Because they didnât like the book.
⢠Because my book is terrible.
⢠And if my book is terrible, then that makes me a terrible writer.
⢠Maybe I should just stop writing.
⢠Who was I to think I could do this?
⢠Iâm clearly not good enough.
⢠Or maybe they left a bad review because theyâre an idiot and didnât get the brilliance of my work.
⢠Clearly theyâre a moron.
⢠Maybe I should track them down and tell them just that.
⢠Maybe I should rally everyone I know on Instagram to shame that dimwit for leaving that review.
⢠âŚ
⌠this can go on, until it loops back to the top and starts again. Sounds familiar?
What kind of state do you think youâd be in from obsessing over those disempowering, angering questions, never able to get closure because the loop has no logical end?
Empowering Alternatives.
My own experience of asking myself lousy questions, and my interactions with others within the writing community, have left me convinced that writers need to start asking themselves more empowering questions.
Because the way we tend to ask questions to ourselfâthose that breed anger, and resentment, and self doubtâultimately only bring us back to two fears that sit at the root of it all: the fear that weâre not good enough, and the fear that we wonât be loved (or appreciated, or liked). These fears can be crippling. And that canât be good for anyoneâs art anywhere.
Iâm writing this today to give you some more empowering alternatives. Some that I have used along my journey and have helped me improve.
Here are four examples:
#1 â gearing up for success:
⢠Instead of: âWhy are other writers so much more successful than I am?â
⢠Ask yourself: âWhat I can learn from other writers to become more successful myself?â
Thereâs a lot of comparison out there. We know we shouldnât fall into the trap of it, but itâs easier said than done.
If you see fellow writers thriving with their writing, their social media strategy or their exposure, try modelling what they do that is working and find what, from that, works for you.
Better even, reach out to people and ask them for adviceâmost people will be more than happy to share, and itâs a great way to build a network!
#2 â boosting sales:
⢠Instead of: âWhy am I not selling books?â
⢠Ask yourself: âWhat I can do to increase my book sales?â
It can be discouraging to have published something, and to see your sales figures stalling. If you start wallowing in self pity through disempowering âwhyâ questions, youâre bound to start spiralling.
Instead, make a list of what you could do to help your sales along.
Here are some ideas that come to mind:
⢠Seek out book clubs and put your book on their radar. See if theyâd been interested in reading your book and having you for an author Q&A when theyâre done reading the book.
⢠Look into running promotions on Amazon (like discounted eBooks).
⢠Go local! Reach out to your local community and spread the word (cafes, local bookshops and libraries, local Facebook groups and communities etc.) and give them a chance to support a local.
⢠Contact your old school or university and enquire about showcasing you and your book as an alumni success story.
⢠Build genuine connections with fellow writers, avid readers and book bloggers. These relationships are a fantastic way to increase your reach and spreading the word about your bookâand as a result, improve sales.
⢠Offer to do a read and review swap with a fellow author, where you read and review each otherâs book.
⢠And so on.
If you start asking your brain to think outside the box, itâll do just that!
#3 â the writerâs life:
⢠Instead of: âWhy canât I be a full-time writer and have financial security from writing?â
⢠Ask yourself: 'How is my present occupation helping my writing?â
⢠âŚAnd then ask: 'What can I do to increase my revenue from writing?â
This is one topic thatâs been crossing my mind a lot, and I suspect many of us out there have pondered it at one point or other. If asked the wrong way, this question can send you spiralling into a frustrated state.
I donât write full-time at present, and I have had my moments of daydreaming hours away, wishing I could live off my craft. That never led to anything very productive.
What I have found helpful however has been to focus on what my day job enables me to do with my writing:
⢠It takes away the pressure of earning a full income from writing.
⢠It gives me time to write and experiment with my craft in different forms.
⢠It enables me to look into ways to monetise my writing at my own pace.
⢠And thatâs made for much more exciting trains of thought!
#4 â social media guru:
⢠Instead of: âWhy canât I manage to grow my Instagram reach?â Or âwhy is social media sapping my energy?â
⢠Ask yourself: âWhat can I do to create a healthier balance when it comes to promotion efforts?â
Social media is a tricky one. It has incredible benefits if leveraged the right way, and itâs an amazing tool to get yourself and your work out there. In fact, I recently wrote a piece on the immense value of joining Bookstagram for writers.
But it can also be a drain, because the mechanisms of social media are built on the principle of addiction. Itâs literally designed to suck you in and make you crave more, and fear that youâre missing out and not doing enough.
To avoid falling into that vicious circle, Iâve found it much healthier to ask myself how I can find the right balance to achieve what I want with my social media presence whilst also keeping my sanity. What this ends up being will look different for different people. If youâre unsure where to start, think about what you find challenging about maintaining your social media account, then what you find helps with your peace of mind, and try to find a middle ground somewhere in between that meets your needs.
Ask and thou shalt get.
Iâm a firm believer in our ability to manifest our realityâat least to some extent. If you focus on all the wrong things, then your reality will look challenging and bleak.
If you train yourself to look for constructive ways forward and to get yourself excited about making the journey smoother for yourself, then finding that sweet spot that works for you can be a fascinating journey.
And that all starts with asking the right questions. Finding the right point of focus. Writing can be a wonderful, yet at times confusing and challenging journey. So do yourself a favour: where possible, take away those mind blocks that stand in your way!
Different questions about your writing journey illicit different points of focus, and therefore different states. Some are more conducive to a positive mindset, whilst others tend to nurture frustration.

One Dress a Week Challenge
August: Orange
Enchanted April / Josie Lawrence as Lottie Wilkins
This is the sort of thing Lottie starts wearing almost immediately when she arrives in Italy. It's a shame that it's so hard to get a good look at this dress, particularly the flame-toned skirt. It looks very cool and comfortable. The top seems to be double-layered, with a white foundation overlaid by a sheer sort of tunic with floral designs and elbow-length sleeves.
I saw a speculation on a blog that some or most of the costumes in this movie may have been actual vintage pieces from the 1920s. The blogger said she thought she remembered reading that they were, but that she couldn't find the source again to confirm it. I would find that easy to believe, though, because of the intricacy of the detailing on many of the dresses, including this one.

Codename: Chimera by J K Persy #JKPersy
Very pretty cover for Codename: Chimera by J K Persy. I got this book back in February of 2014, but didnât read it until 1.15.15. I loved it and I donât have any excuse for waiting so long to share it with you. The cover does not make me think of the cozy mystery that it is.

Amazon / Goodreads
MY REVIEW
During their investigation, they learned about a project called Chimera and now the mystery deepens. Is it a conspiracy? Will they kill anyone to keep a secret?
A convoluted mystery centered around a medallion. Who does it belong to?
Codename: Chimera lacked a sense of urgency, but a lot of cozies do. That doesnât mean I donât enjoy them and I loved this one. I was super curious about the outcome and the deaths that follow the medallion.
I loved the trio and was happy to be along for their adventure. Codename: Chimera by J K Persy is not what I expected from looking at the cover, but it all made sense in the end.
The brain teasers are a bonus. I stopped and spent a lot of time trying to solve them. I wonder if you will too.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Codename: Chimera by J K Persy.

I think Iâve read a lot of Fanfiction and basically all the popular ones, and somehow my flame for Fanfiction is going down, so Iâd like to know which fics do you think can make me really, really interested again. Iâm willing to try something new, but I just canât with Age Gap, Sub Kurt, or MPREG, I know it seems kinda picky but I would love if you have a great fanfic recommendation for me! â¤ď¸
Hey Nonnie,
Ooh, challenge accepted! Letâs see if we can get you interested again...
Readers: please chime in with your hidden gems, your roads less travelled by, your unsung heroes, or your own fics that deserve to be discovered and loved by way more people than have stumbled on them so far.
Hugs,
Marjan

So, in one of your posts you mentioned that you could write a lot about the different contexts in which Danny introduces himself as Danny vs. the Iron Fist. Is there any chance we could ever read those thoughts. Thank you so much for running such an amazing blog; I love it.
I want to preface this with a general statement and apology:
This blog has slowed down a bit in the last⌠year? Ish? Possibly longer? And this is because life has gotten much more hectic for a variety of reasons. My wonderful co-blogger has been busy enough that she doesnât really have time to blog anymore, and my life has been fairly chaotic as well. There are messages in the inbox that have been there for a really long time (this one included), and I want to assure you that they will be answered, and that this blog does, in fact, still welcome questions! Thank you all so much for your patience, hello to any new followers, keep on Daredevilling, wash your hands⌠and now, letâs talk about our boy Danny!
(Context: The post being referenced is this one.)
MCU Dannyâs overall story arc orbited around concepts of identity. The entire first season of Iron Fist is an identity questâ Danny returns to Earth, has his identity as Danny Rand stripped away and fights to reclaim it, has his identity as the Iron Fist challenged and fights to defend that, and then is faced with the question of how to balance both of those identitiesâ his adherence to the honor and duties of being the Iron Fist, but informed by his sensibilities and past life as Danny Rand. At the end of the season, he makes the wise choice to return to Kâun-Lun to continue his training, to focus more on his role as an Immortal Weapon, only to discover that⌠something horrible has happened to his home. The truth of what actually happened to Kâun-Lun was a mystery that was never answered, and remains for me one of these showsâ most frustrating cliffhangers. But regardless, this discovery is a bomb dropped in the middle of his identity quest. He believes his home was invaded, and itâs notable that his traumatic nightmares of his parentsâ deaths are replaced by nightmares of Kâun-Lunâs destruction. He feels he cannot fully claim the title of Iron Fist anymore because he has failed in his duties. He has failed his family, his home, the people he was supposed to protect. But he also clings to that identity more tightly than ever as he commits every moment of his life to righting that wrong, to fixing this unforgivable mistake. He is angry and grieving when we see him in The Defenders, his identity a painful, mixed-up thing, and this fact has to be taken into account as we look at the ways Danny introduces himself in that show.
Overall, my feeling is that Iâm thinking a lot more about this than the writers were, but hey, itâs still fun to examine. Letâs take a look⌠ Â

[ID: A screenshot of Danny Rand and Colleen Wing in a dark, green-tinged tunnel, kneeling next to an injured man (Shaft, a member of the Chaste).]
Danny (subtitle):Â âMy name is Danny. Iâm hunting members of the Hand.â
This, his first introduction in the show, is a telling one. He is here in a professional capacity as the Iron Fist, doing strictly Iron Fist business (hunting the Hand), fully embodying that identity, yet he doesnât introduce himself as such. Instead, heâs just âDannyâ. (Note: not âDanny Randâ. Dannyâs association with the name Rand is another complicated topic that Iâll get back to later.) This is in spite of the fact that he has reason to assume, given that Shaft knows about the Hand, that he would know about the Iron Fist legacy as well. Â
This can be taken a few different ways. Itâs possible that heâs using Danny as just as shorthand; itâs more personal, and he may want to put Shaft at ease by using his civilian name. Or, at this early stage, having now suffered yet another failure of being unable to protect Shaft, it could be reflective of the fact that he doesnât feel worthy of the title. He is shocked when Shaft recognizes him as the Iron Fistâ maybe because he didnât think Shaft would be so informed, maybe because he is embarrassed and ashamed to be addressed as such.  Â

[ID: Screenshot of Danny standing in Colleenâs dojo, arms folded, looking intensely sincere. He is speaking to Luke Cage (off-screen).]
Danny:Â âIâm the Immortal Iron Fist.â
And here we have the exact opposite. The above scene with Shaft is very intimate, personal, emotional. Danny is avoiding his Iron Fist identity, downplaying himself. Everything is very quiet and desperate and genuine.Â
Here, though⌠Danny is wearing a mask. He is introducing himself in a succinct, summarizing way; projecting an image, providing information. His personal feelings about his identity are completely absent from this scene, because no way in hell is he going to reveal that vulnerable side of himself to someone he barely knows and doesnât trust (yet). He is also reacting to Lukeâs behavior, which up until this point has been dismissive at best, violent at worst. Luke is a sore spot here: a person who Danny initially thought was working with the Hand, and who he struggled to beat in a fight. If Danny was ashamed before, he is extra humiliated now, standing in front of Luke and being scoffed at (âOh, this is a joke. Come onâ).Â
And so he presents himself as the powerful, in-control Iron Fist he doesnât actually believe himself to be (âI can answer myselfâ etc.), throws down a Clif-Notes version of his backstory so Luke can understand who he is, what he was doing when they first met, and why he is a trustworthy ally/asset, and introduces himself with the most formal, intimidating version of his title. Danny is recovering from a bruised ego, and wants the unpleasantness out of the way so that he can continue with his missionâ and if Luke is capable of helping, then he wants to make that connection with as little angst and fuss as possible. He needs Luke to know that he is the Iron Fist, even if he doesnât feel like he actually is.Â

[ID: Screenshot of Danny strolling into the lobby of Midland Circle, wearing a business suit.]
Receptionist:Â âName, please.â
Danny:Â âDaniel Rand, of Rand Enterprises.â
Having seen one mask, we now get to see the otherâ this one much more fabricated, though he pulls it off with STYLE. (That swagger! I love this scene.) This is Business Danny at his Business Danny-est: Daniel Rand of Rand Enterprises, wearing a tie and everything. Danny is not a businessperson, as he himself says. He has never been a businessperson. He has never wanted to be a businessperson. And, as he also readily admits, he is not a very good businessperson. But itâs a mask he tried on in IF Season One for identity quest purposesâ to tether himself to the Rand name, his civilian identity, which was his sole remaining connection to Earth and which the Meachums were trying to rip away from himâ and itâs a mask he now dons again, this time as a weapon against the Hand. His introduction here is just as much of a necessary facade as his introduction to Luke was in the previous example, but this one lacks the emotional baggage.Â

[ID: The same scene as previous; Danny is smirking coldly at the Midland Circle receptionist.]
Receptionist:Â âAre they expecting you?â
Danny:Â â[Chuckles softly] Not like this.â
Okay, sorry, I always say this when discussing this scene, butâŚÂ DANG. Get âem.Â

[ID: Screenshot of Danny standing in a white-walled Midland Circle conference room, hands folded in front of him, his back to an open door. A whole bunch of people in suits are sitting at a long conference table in front of him, watching him speak.â
Danny:Â âMy name is Danny Rand.â
The charade continues (though note the switch from âDanielâ to âDannyâ. He is being just as formal and fake here, but heâs never really been a âDanielâ and itâs possible he says it without thinking). I talked about this moment in detail in the original post, regarding Dannyâs strategy and the challenges he faces as his plan starts to go awry, so I wonât repeat myself here, but I will point out that Danny keeps this mask on for as long as he can, even after revealing that he knows they are the Hand, even after Alexandra shows up and starts behaving condescendingly toward him. He embodies the Danny Rand of Rand Enterprises identity for as long as possible, so that they donât see him as a physical threat until he wants them to, and so that when the moment arrives, it can be as impactful as it needs to be. He wants them off their guard, unsettled, frightened.

[ID: A close-up of Danny from the shoulders up, same scene as above. He is resolute.]
Danny:Â âI am the Immortal Iron Fist, weapon of Kâun-Lun.â
I think this is genuine. Yes, itâs a shock-and-awe tactic to tell the Hand who theyâre really dealing with, but I also think that in this moment, Danny rediscovers some of his confidence. He believes that, after all of his shame and failures, he has found a plan that will work. He has finally tracked down the Hand, he has breached their defenses in a way they were not expecting, and he believes that he can now destroy them. And then he gets emotional. This is about honor and vengeance, and they need to know who itâs coming from and what they are paying for. âI am the Immortal Iron Fist, weapon of Kâun-Lunââ he is retaking his ownership as defender of his city, because he needs to, because he believes he finally can. He has conviction in his identity as the Iron Fist for the first time since the last few episodes of his solo show. And man, it hurts so much to find out that he is wrong.Â

[ID: Screenshot of Danny, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Matt Murdock (in civvies with a grey scarf tied over his face), standing in a tight circle in a dimly-lit room (a restaurant). Danny is talking to Jessica.]
Danny: âHey, Iâm, uh⌠Iâm Danny.â
Jessica:Â âJessica.â
Here is our final scene of Danny introductions: the team dinner, in which he introduces himself to Jessica, and tries to do the same to Matt (who is being grumpy and incognito and therefore is unreceptive to introductions). This one doesnât have the emotional complexity of the previous examplesâ Danny is super cheerful and endearing here, delighted to meet these other superheroes and to have found more allies, and he introduces himself with a healthy, informal âDannyâ. The beginning of the team-up is the start of the breakdown of his character arc, but itâs a very cute scene regardlessâ a glimpse of the happy, well-adjusted (or at least adequately repressed) Danny that we had not seen in the MCU at this point since the beginning of IF Season One. Â

[ID: The same scene. The four of them are standing around a plate-laden table. Matt is leaning intently toward Danny with his hands on his hips, listening to him speak.]
Danny:Â âSworn protector of Kâun-Lun.â
Part of Dannyâs relaxed-ness comes from his belief, again, that with these new allies, his revenge quest is achievable. He is also clearly relieved to have help. He introduces himself as just âDannyâ initiallyâ using the most informal and least baggage-laden version of his identity, forming a personal connection with themâ and then introduces himself as the Immortal Iron Fist, âsworn protector of Kâun-Lunâ later, when he starts explaining his role in the fight against the Hand. He is very relaxed about referring to himself in this way here, partly becauseâ againâ his sense of self and security has been bolstered, he is feeling good and hopeful, and also, itâs just necessary context that he knows he needs to provide. Specifically, he refers to himself as such to Matt, because he has gathered at this point that Matt has Chaste connections, and therefore assumes that he knows about the Iron Fist legacy. Little does he suspect that overly-emotional Matt failed out of Chaste School before learning any of the important backstory, and is therefore clueless.Â

[ID: Screenshot of Misty Knight looking over Lukeâs shoulder at something that clearly upsets her.]
Danny (off-screen):Â âYou got a chair?â
Please indulge me for just a second: Am I bitter that we didnât see Danny properly introduce himself to Misty? Am I bitter that their relationship was almost entirely neglected in these shows? Yes, just a little.Â
  AnywayâŚ
Overall, Dannyâs emotional arc in this show suffered for the sake of the team-up, and I feel like there is not as much significance in these introductionsâ these shorthands for Dannyâs identity strugglesâ as there should have been/would have been if this were his show. That said, I do think they are important, and I loved digging into this. Dannyâs journey is one of my favorites out of all of the Netflix Marvel protagonists, and I love taking it apart and examining it.Â
Again, Iâm sorry this post was so long delayed, and thank you for the question!

Fic Appreciation Bingo - Squares Transcription

Here's the transcription of the Fic Appreciation Bingo cards squares. I've included links/explanations where possible or necessary. If you still have questions about it, just ask me and I'll do my best to help you. đ
Default Squares

These squares will be present in all cards, to give more space to under represented/appreciated fics.
1 - WIP
Work in progress. Many of us wait until a fic is complete before we read it - I do this most of the time. It's understandable; who hasn't been burned by a fic we loved but was abandoned or never finished?
For this square, we're going to take risks!
Comments on a WIP encourage the author to keep going and finish their fic; or maybe to go back to a project they haven't worked on for some time.
You can even tell a writer that you really love their fic, even if it was never finished or they've abandoned it. đ
2 - PODFIC
Podfic is an audio recording of fanfic, read aloud by a fan (or several). Podfics are not as popular as written fics, and that's a shame. There are some truly amazing podfics out there, lots of different styles, and they're all made with heart.
If you really dislike audio content, or can't listen to it for any reason, to fill this square you can find the podfic version of a fic you like, and leave a comment thanking the podficcer for making a story you like, accessible to more people. :)
3 - "Less than 50 kudos" & "Less than 30 comments"
These are there to assure we also pay attention to less known, under-appreciated works.
And the necessary Free square, of course. đ
Keep in mind that most of these are only guidelines & suggestions. Use your creativity and have fun! If a fill makes sense to you, it makes sense to me . đ
Let's get to the first card transcription: the General Card!
General Card
Favorite fic
Your favorite fic. That's it, that's the square.
Multi-chapter
A fic with more than one chapter. That wasn't as hard as I thought!
LGBTQ+ QUILTBAG
One or more protagonists of the fic identify as members of the LGBTQ+QUILTBAG community. Any identity counts, as longs as **it is clear in the text**.
This doesn't have to be through romantic pairing; the character can be trans, ace, intersex, etc.
Fantasy & Sci-fi
Lord of the Rings and Star Trek vibes. Androids. Wizards. You know this stuff, so why am I still talking?
Angst
The dictionary defines angst as "a feeling of deep anxiety or dread, typically an unfocused one about..." Yeah, no. Sorry!
In fic, angst usually is about the characters and their feelings - about their romantic interest, their past, their past & errors, the challenges they face... They're uncertain about all of hose things, and probably their own worth.
Except, it also means the angst you, the reader, feel as you read about the character's trials and travails. Are they sad? You're wailing. That sort of thing.
On a second thought, yeah, deep anxiety and dread checks out. đś
Oldest fic you've read
By publication date. If you read it yesterday, but it was published in 1997 and you haven't read anything published before that, it counts. đ
Fluff
The opposite of angst! Everything is beautiful and nothing hurts. Sweet, happy stories with happy endings.
Animals
Dogs. Cats. Horses. Unicorns. Lizards.
Dog-walkers, cat-wranglers, unicorn-wrestlers.
If there are animals in it, it fits.
Favorite author
I know, I know. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO CHOOSE?!
You love them all, and so do I. But this is a hard game, my peeps. Hard, difficult choices must be made for the good of our fanfic bingo nation.
At least until you decide to fill this card again. đ
Under 5k
Which means, no more than 4.999 words.
Nope, you can't go higher than that.
Nope, 5.000 words doesn't count.
Okay, how about this: if you find a fic with exactly 5.000 words, I'll give you a pass. đ
Humor
A fic that successfully accomplishes what I've been trying to do with this text, I guess? đ¤đđ
Alright, alright. Anything that makes you laugh is good.
Food
All and any things related to food, cooking and eating! This is the square for those fics that made you hungry and burn with desire for a personal chef or cooking lessons.
Food bloggers. Cooking channel on Youtube. Bucky is an amazing baker. Steve is an stress baker. Chefs. Sommeliers. Dinners. Even pizza take-out counts!
First fic you ever read
I bet this is going to take you down memory lane, isn't it? đ
If you don't remember it, or it's not available anymore, go for the first you remember that's still accessible.
Music
Millions of fics have titles based on songs, and sure, you can go that route. But there are other options! Bands. Musicians. Singers. Fics based entirely on a song, not only the title.
Stories where a song is really important to the plot or the characters. The protagonist works on an instrument shop or is a music teacher. So many possibilities!
Historical AU
Any period of time is valid: Victorian, Medieval, Middle Ages, Ancient Egypt... you get the idea.
Fair warning, though: if you come and say a fic set in the 80's is historical, I will hate you. The 80's were the last decade, you heathen! đ¤¨
Latest read
This is almost a second free square: the fic you read most recently.
New author to me
Fic written by an author you haven't read before.
Recommended to me
If you have friends who read and rec fics to you, great. If not, a suggestion from a rec blog like Epic Stucky Fic Recs @epicstuckyficrecs or The Stucky Library @stuckylibrary totally counts.
You can also ask me for a rec if you'd like! đ
Sports & Games
Here we have the obvious like football, hockey, swimming, of course; but also Olympic skating, dancing, baseball, running, fitness, etc.
Fantasy football and MMORPG.
Video and board games. And even the Hunger Games if you wish!
Paranormal AU
Lots of fics that go bump in the night!
The classic vampires & werewolves keep company with ghosts, curses and unicorns (but only if you didn't use your unicorn fic for the Animals square! đ), shapeshifters, wizards, witches and all kinds of supernatural things.
Who you gonna call?
That's it for now! Next up, Stucky cards & their squares!

A Lie As Old As Time
We here at the KCFTP pride ourselves on providing a voice to the members of the community who arenât a niche group of loud screeching monkeys as our counterparts. We have been made aware of the following post provided to us and we see that the lies are being peddled once again. While we try to stay out of political discussion not centered around the community, we must comment that much of what the social justice kemetics spread are myths, myths that have been debated and debunked by many political minded individuals over the last few years. They keep spreading the same lies and misinformation to demonize and dehumanize all dissents of their opinions. This is a common tactic to silence and poison any wells of discussion preemptively.
This post produced by Satsekhem is such a hate piece. We provide the link for perusal here: XX
This mod would like to state in particular that content creators have spoken out, they have commented, they have produced works for the community and the social justice kemetics attacked them. The motivations have ranged between being challenged by displays of piety to extremely exaggerated fabrications. We would like to mention, they have worked hard to demonize and slander all of these valuable resources and intelligent individuals for the sake of not being agreeing to their political screeds, while promoting their own purity. They have lied to everyone multiple times in effort to keep newcomers ignorant and easily controlled by being the sole providers of information and discouraging all others they do not approve. Our community is fractured, and that fracture began with the social justice kemetics demanding obedience to their opinions.
We would like to mention that reading this post we are baffled how anyone can have such a complete lack of self awareness, awareness in general, and common sense. The âbad kemeticsâ being discussed here were worthwhile content creators and intelligent people, valuable members of our community. We are impressed by the complete lack of honesty in this post and lack of integrity to tell the truth. The arrogance and self importance to think they can judge kemetics as âworthy or notâ based on who kow-towâs to their political ideologies.
Normally this mod would pick apart this post and point out all of itâs fallacies, lies, and bold faced fabrications, but the entire post is made of this. We would like to mention the anon has asked how they can convince people to submit content and create content or bring in content creators without them being attacked like the past. Without missing a beat Satsekhem attacks them and tone polices them. We are not surprised but we feel this shows the utter incompetence, cruelty, vicious hatred, and bigotry of the social justice kemetics. Our archives are filled with examples. They lie and shame people into silence and then pretend itâs âcreating a safe space in the name of minoritiesâ and yet when those minorities speak up to protest they are silenced, shouted down, and cast off as ânot the correct minoritiesâ. We need to state that the over aching issue is the social justice kemetics like satsekhem are bigoted and myopic to any opinions, thoughts, and knwoledge that disagrees with them, acting like a band of cultist thugs. We need to inform you, the community is now a virtual wasteland of your own making, a blasted heath of inactivity. Well done, your stubborn racist ideology, as it does to all things it interacts with, has destroyed the community.
- Memphis
Interesting that you would use Archer, Sat, considering a guy like him probably wouldnât give two flying figs about your political opinions. That, and how you accused the anon of whataboutism when they express fears of innocent bloggers being dogpiled by sjw Kemetics. How ironic!
Who died and made you one of the supreme moral arbiters of Kemeticism, Satsekhem? No pharaoh bequeathed the throne to you or your cohorts. The pharaoh was both the political and religious leader of Egypt because there was no separation between church and state. Thatâs the same reason why Maâat was political during ancient times. Kemeticism was the state religion! That doesnât exist anymore. Most Western countries are secular now. Why would Maâat be political now, especially when we live in countries that are often comprised of citizens adhering to many religions? People have many thoughts as to whatâs moral and whatâs not; who are you (or Smarmy, Devo, etc.) to impose your religious morality on others? Would you want a Christian or Muslim (or anyone of any other religion) placing their imperatives into law? Forcing others to practice your beliefs through law sounds a lot like...fascism...
Even if Maâat was historically political, historical Maâat in no way resembles present day social âjusticeâ. Charity was definitely a thing, sure, but equity for class, sex, sexual orientation, etc? No way. Rich was supposed to be rich, poor to be poor. Women, despite having more status than in other ancient societies, were still supposed to be wives and mothers, and their status still attached to their fathers and husbands. Egypt was a patriarchal culture. Even if Egypt was more permissive towards homosexuality, they still looked down on guys who were the âbottomâ of the relationship. Above all, Egypt was imperialist - they conquered and occupied Nubia and other areas around the Middle East. Do you really think ancient Egyptians would give a ratâs ass about minorities? They had slavery, for goodnessâ sake! They sure as hell werenât checking their Egyptian privilege when subjugating Nubians. Class, gender roles, war, subjugating vulnerable people, and a whole bunch of other injustices were considered to be part of Maâat back then. You canât say only one attribute of Maâat is immutable and the others werenât. Insisting that Maâat is political these days is absolutely moronic. Read a history book!
(All this can also apply to Devoâs recent post âMaâat Was Always Politicalâ.)
Someone as uninformed and deluded as yourself should not be an authority to determine who is welcome in a community and who isnât. You clearly donât understand what Maâat is, historical or contemporary. When someone disagrees with you as to what Maâat is, you condemn them instead of engaging with them in debate or dialogue. Youâre nothing but a Mean Girl; you and your buddies are an immature little clique who excludes anyone who does not adhere to the religion of far-left intersectionality. Youâre barely Kemetics and the worst pick for leaders of any type of group.
-Karnak
For this community to recover it needs a time of healing, or peace, of absence from these cruel, callous, vicious children.

DNF 14 hours 6 minutes in (76%).
I found myself much less interested in the the story than in the first book. I'm still uneasy with some of the character choices I mentioned in the first book's review and I couldn't tell when or if they would be resolved. Ultimately, while I'm unable to pin down exactly what I don't like about this book, trying to make myself finish it resulted in a period of several days where I barely read anything and could only handle re-reads. As soon as I officially DNF'd this I was able to read other stuff again. For me, that's enough.

Business of Art | Neurodivergent Artists Build Community

âMy advice would be to look for each other and look after each otherâbe generous and share skills.â - Sonia BouĂŠ
Imagine a time when neurodiversity is integrated into the art worldâs everyday vocabulary. Is this a new concept for you? Neurodiversity stipulates that neurological differences are to be recognized and respected as any other human variation. Increasingly, more and more peopleâand artistsâidentify as neurodivergent, or as individuals who diverge from the dominant societal standards of ânormalâ neurocognitive functioning. These differences can include Dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autistic Spectrum, and others.
Now imagine an average event or opportunity for artists. This may be a networking event that features unstructured conversations, or an open call for funding that requires you to prove a strong network of support. For neurodivergent artists, these ubiquitous realities can present many challenges that often go unseen.
As a way of acknowledging barriers to access and offering solutions, weâve invited Sonia BouĂŠ to share her experiences and recommendations. BouĂŠÂ is a visual multiform autistic artist and a prolific blogger on autism and art. Read her writings here, and visit her website to learn more about her practice. Since being diagnosed as autistic in 2016, BouĂŠ created WEBworks, a network and mentoring project funded by Arts Council England based on her own experiences and research. BouĂŠ designs projects, mentors, provides training, and consults for arts organizations with the goal of creating opportunity for neurodivergent artists. Â
Says BouĂŠ: âI love my work because it is really varied and I get to work with some seriously talented neurodivergent creatives. Working with organizations is also fascinating and rewarding when you get to see thinking evolve.â Read BouĂŠâs advice for neurodivergent and introverted artists below, as well as arts administrators.
NYFA: Youâve talked about ânetwork ableismâ and its impact on you in your quest to fund your projects. Can you tell us more? How do you define ableism in this context?Â
Sonia BouĂŠ (SB): Network ableism in my experience is the assumption that social privilege (ability) is a baseline we all have access to if and when we want it. Because most opportunity in the arts involves some networking, this is a serious access issue for us.Â
We canât all summon up a smile and waltz into a roomâand there can be many very good reasons why not, some of which may be neurological. For example, dyspraxia, which affects motor coordination and sometimes speech, can make these situations hard to navigate. We may not recognize faces or be able to remember names.
Thereâs a lot of shaming around not being "socially ableâ so it takes courage to say it. Decades of not showing up can mean that you donât understand how conventional networks function. I had to unpick a lot of this to learn how to write a funding bid.Â
Social assumption also runs through the kind of Arts Council England funding bid I needed to make for my project. Your idea may be brilliant but unless you can find partners to back you (network klaxon!) you will not succeed.
NYFA: Youâve written that when you encounter an ableist comment, you think, âthis person needs training â and I (and all my autistic colleagues) hold much of the missing knowledge.â How can institutions work to welcome and incorporate this knowledge?Â
SB: Itâs a brilliant question, and this issue is in the room always. Institutions just arenât seeing it because of the social stigma involved. So first I think it needs to go on the agenda. Staff will also be autistic, neurodivergent, or introverted.Â
Then itâs important to invite us in to your organization formally. We are consultants, speakers, and trainers. My view is that we should be paid for our work which is incredibly valuable to arts organizations as we are authentic voices.Â
But it takes more than a training day! Building trust with community is also very important for any organization; ultimately itâs about relationships. Consider commissioning a review of marketing and events from neurodivergent perspectives.Â
You can tell a lot about an organization from their use of language. Knowing who you are talking to and getting your message right are an absolute must. Delivering value to community is also essential.Â
NYFA: Do you have thoughts on how organizations that emphasize in-person events can make them more welcoming to neurodivergent artists?Â
SB:Â If you mean networking events, this is a bit like asking a wheelchair user whether they are sure they wouldnât like to try the stairs just in case! But here are things which can help with in-person events.Â
Personally, I need people on the inside who know me well, and access to the door. Environment matters greatly; is your building accessible for those with sensory sensitivity? Will your event be noisy, involve crowds, and involve mainly unstructured chats? Tell us!Â
Information is the name of the game. I advise always publishing clear and detailed information giving a sensory menu for neurodivergent attendees so they can plan for what to expect from the event in terms of challenge.Â
Itâs the genuine thoughtfulness and attention to detail that counts in the welcome. Providing lots of options is also vital. Is there a quiet room with soft furnishing and dim lights, or outdoor spaces? Are there specific structured elements?Â
Finally, the offer has to be right. If the event holds no interest, Iâm not coming. Look into programming with a consultant from the community.Â
NYFA: Are there resources or voices that youâd especially recommend to arts administrators looking to learn more?Â
SB:Â Essentially we are talking about a culture shift in our understanding that humans are neurodiverse beings. Often Iâve found that the adaptations that suit neurodivergent people can benefit us all. This is about increasing options and thinking about individuality.
I recommend these neurodivergent thinkers, bloggers, creatives, and resources:
Thinking Personâs Guide to Autism
Autism and Expectations: De-Mystifying AutismÂ
Dan Holloway, Rogue Interrobang
Katherine MayÂ
Sonja ZeliÄ
Kruse on adaptations to environments
Dr. Kate Fox Â
Dr. Damian Milton
Jon Adams
I donât particularly recommend sourcing resources from disability arts organizations that arenât neurodivergent-led. My experience is that the thinking is often not there yet, despite some best efforts.Â
Personally, I like to be very specific and stick to what I know. I wouldnât try to advocate for other groups and always try to remember that within neurodivergent groups, thereâs probably greater diversity than in the general population.Â
NYFA: Many artists, for a variety of reasons, feel the typical networking advice is unhelpful or exclusionary. And we ourselves have given this advice! Letâs reframe the conversation: what is some more inclusive and effective networking advice that organizations and artists can begin to share with each other?Â
SB:Â I think itâs worth unpicking what some of the difficulties are in quite some detail, as I began to hint earlier. Networking can be hellish if you canât process language in real-time speed, for example. So this needs an honest and open two-directional approach.Â
Have you ever been in a room with someone and texted them? Iâm sure most of us have. Text slows things right down, and, you can use emojis! Result! Often weâre critical of using technology when weâre face-to-face, but if this could be an adaption, why not?Â
Itâs an exciting time to be breaking through the barriers to invisible disability. What holds us back is often social censure, which is ultimately ableist. Organizations could lead the way in creating a new trend.Â
If we think about modalities, this is also helpful. How many ways of being in a room and communicating can you think of? I also love the âgateway friendâ idea: a known, trusted person who can enable you to get in to a venue and out again.Â
But we need to understand adaptations to in-person networking are limited in effectiveness becauseâwash, rinse, repeatâwe have to keep it up which is exhausting. Or it just doesnât work for us. This knowledge puts the onus on change.Â
NYFA: What are your favorite means of networking online?Â
SB:Â Blogging, blogging, blogging! This has been the most effective tool in my entire armory. I also love Twitter. I began with a Facebook artistsâ page many years ago, then progressed to a professional platform with the wonderful a-n Blogs.
My Wordpress blog has been my most significant online site, far outstripping any other. Iâm also warming to Instagram as a more visual platform but have been slower to take it on. I think itâs hard to work across platforms but probably essential.Â
NYFA: Can you tell us how WEBworks, an autistic-led peer support and mentoring group, came to be? How could this kind of group be replicated by autistic and neurodivergent creatives elsewhere?Â
SB: WEBworks is unique due to the individuals whoâve formed it. It may provide a transferable model but we canât yet know that, I feel. It developed from my Arts Council England research into autistic project leadership.Â
I happened on a mentoring model through my own need to understand the âneurotypicalâ workplace and then found other artists like me who needed support. Genuine enablement through supported opportunities and specific adaptations are a powerful combination we use.Â
I now know this to be a responsive and relational approach and will be writing about it in more detail for my Arts Council England project evaluations. I hope to publish some of our findings next year.Â

NYFA:Â What are your favorite resources for neurodivergent artists looking to build community or navigate the art world?Â
SB: Thereâs no substitute for trawling the internet and Iâve built my entire community by sharing work and spending untold hours in online research. Social media platforms can be game-changing for us, though of course we need ârealtime' contacts too.Â
Often virtual and realtime contact overlaps as relationships deepen. I think the usefulness of contacts and resources could be quite specific in each case. My advice would be to look for each other and look after each otherâbe generous and share skills.Â
Even neurodivergent networks can seem distant and closed from the outside. The most effective antidote to professional isolation is to send powerful smoke signals online, from which you can seek out more local neurodivergent contacts. Weâre growing in number as we discover identityÂ
Being safe online is an issue Iâd like to mention. We can all be taken advantage of, so I would also counsel caution. Take things slowly and allow genuine connection and trust to build up.Â
Regarding the art world, in the United Kingdom I recommend the wonderfully inclusive online artists network a-n Blogs, whose support has been exceptional including publishing articles about this topic!Â
Viewing fantastic online art content when you canât get to many shows provides inspiration and learning. I love to watch the Tate Modern YouTube channel, and I do follow many wonderful U.K. and international artists on Twitter and Instagram, which helps me keep in touch,Â
But I feel it is vital that neurodivergent artists donât get dispirited or compare themselves to more neurotypical artists so I watch the scene with a dispassionate eye. Iâm interested in building from within and remaining authentic which includes valuing the unique qualities of our neurological status.
NYFA: What has mentorship meant for you, both as a mentee and a mentor? Â
SB: Trust is at the heart of the mentor/mentee relationship, and itâs a real joy, not to say privilege. I believe such support in an art practice is underrated. We are supposed to know how to navigate an uncertain profession solo.
For myself it has led to professional progression where, despite some early breaks, the complexities of the art world would have thrown me entirely. In many ways itâs about lending experience and gently steering.
Mentoring is a fascinating process because you learn as much as your mentee in many ways. It has allowed me to deepen my understanding of neurodivergent challenge in the arts.Â
NYFA: Youâve credited successes in your career in part to your âown autistic methods.â Do you have any thoughts on how artists can not only accept their individual differences, but celebrate them?Â
SB: I really feel we have to embrace a ânot brokenâ philosophy. Some of the artists I work with have acquired huge reservoirs of self-doubt and even despair. Our first job is to realign some of this thinking.Â
Sometimes itâs my job to sustain hope and provide consistency. Our sensory challenges and issues with executive function can make a practice feel fragmentary until we begin to piece it all together.Â
The worry that you can never âfinishâ a piece of work can be quelled if you understand that the process is what interests you most and you can begin to value this. Transformation from âfailureâ to a more performative practice can take place.Â
How we frame our creative lives to ourselves really matters. Reconnecting to the source of our creativityâour brainsâas valid and useful is incredibly empowering.Â
